david minor’s debut album ‘sparse’, nominated for the german record critics’ award in 2010, found a wide range of feedback and positive shouts for its highly personal amalgam of jazz, vaudeville, classical music and electronica. ‘lush’, his second release on nonine recordings follows the path of it’s predecessor, increasing david’s musical cosmos with large fields of post-cinematic experimentation, noise and the pure joy in editing.

the recent electronic scene seeks to embrace vocal elements and modern songwriting, as heard on the albums of matthew dear, eskmo or the actual james blake release. in contrast,  david minor does not intend to emphase his lyrics to approach a deeper (although minimal filter effects are used in his vocals), closer and almost hidden presence. minor melts the obvious oppressive feel of ‘lush’ into an almost intimate sound and musical experience, invites to repeated listening and displays his hidden underwater caverns and their covert treasures with patience and mature ease.

feedback

a few months have elapsed since the release of 'lush', david minor‘s nine track album of opulent distractions and foggy transmissions. taking the time to let this album settle in without rushing actually works to its advantage; each and every rotation expands upon the previous as it unfolds a new ellipse of sparse electrodes skewing the foundations of ambient electronics.
tentacles of abstract pulses, whirs, clips, and classical elements are peppered with silent tones and a subtlety that is both unsettling and uplifting. voices appear almost at random; a cataclysmic spin of disjointed and uneven lyrics that loosen the lava flows intermittently. experiments with wind instruments, synths and various atmospherics spill from the edges as 'lush' envelops the mysterious and a soundtrack perspective emerges from its roots. and while 'lush' is fraught with thinly scattered noise, these peculiar layers of debris are offset by organic splashes that ultimately create a memorable, if not curious experience during its rendezvous through time and space.

now, it seems that, unless you’re at a concert, music usually takes a backseat to other activities. you listen to music as your walking to work, class, en route to a destination, or while having a conversation. it’s as if satie’s expression of ‘furnishing music’ or background music has become the obvious expectation for the medium. thankfully david minor’s album, 'lush' is a welcomed change of scenery. in order to have an idea of what he sounds like, take nicolas jaar, b. fleischmann, waldeck, burial, combine with a generous portion of the flushed vocals of pierre de gailande, stir and you’ll have an idea of what mr. minor is like. the sound he creates is selfish. it won’t let you participate in any other activity but listening (you won’t want to either).

the deceivingly soft tone of 'lush' hides the sonorous spell that minor’s songs create. one track, 'cabbage movements', starts with an eerily enchanting hook, which ripples through the mind before the cerebral crescendo is heightened by the gentle voice of minor, who beckons the listener on with a question; all before a drum set from he roaring twenties is slid into the foreground of the piece that
continues to build in suspense, without the cost of the multiplicity of the piece distracting the listener. his songs are meticulously engineered, each track, each effect, effortlessly slides from one another like spilt oil spreading across marble. most importantly though he hasn’t kept his style in a petri-dish, he has evolved the subliminal characteristics of his work displayed in 'sparse', while not sacrificing the over all direction that is apparent when viewing the piece as a whole. this is an album that you can’t listen to; you can only listen to it again. it’s well worth the time and the journey in that it’s an enjoyable fresh, fun mix that gives your ears something to actually chew on for a while. i dare you to become bored with this album after attempting to unearth it. some tracks to start with are 'cabbage movements', 'swan drown', and 'honey cr'.

if ‚sparse’ took you down the rabbit hole, ‚lush’ will take you all the way through wonderland. from enigmatic tracks like ‚kant shivers’ and ‚athenas perch’, david's voice goes from an intense poetic tenor to positively angelic and leaves you in a dream like state. he makes the kind of music that doesn't just sound good but creates an almost visual quality to it. ‚lost drudgery and the day’ is one of my favorite tracks that boasts not only cool vocals but also a bitchin music video. if you want to escape from the mundane world seriously think about getting this album.

listening to david minor’s second album lush is like ensconcing oneself in a jagged cocoon.  it is a three dimensional experience, summoning a thick and emotive dream-like consistency.  when there are words, they are are beautiful- acting more as a texture rather than lyrics.  rhythmic jerks and assuaged resonance create a web of reverie, much like the tangle of inner thoughts we lightly grasp and then lose throughout the day.  wrap yourself in lush by downloading it …

david minor, always pushing the boundaries...

from david minor we already know ‚sparse’, which a year following its release in 2009 delighted the german music critics, who included it amongst the nominees for the german record critics award.
that which in ‚sparse’ was a firm statement of intent - which clearly showed what david minor was up to - gains a sublime and subtle sophistication in 'lush', which points to the endless possibilities for this musician from berlin.

in broad strokes, what we encounter in ‚lush’ is a conjunction of diverse musical fragments - torn from electronica, jazz, classical music, from film noir and the luxurious environments of vaudeville - that seem to find sense in the discreet but decisive confrontations of minor's (musical) submissions. not as if it were a battle, but as if in the midst of chaos there was a sort of invisible spirit that can unify all, while respecting the diversity of each fragment, emerging, yet autonomous and personalized. ‚lush’ is built this way, each time we listen to it. in every moment it unfolds almost in silence, asking the listener to devote all his attention and fully investigate the dark and deep musical well built up by david minor, who thus invites us to a fascinating descent into the labyrinthine depths of a sound cave that urges exploration.
