how to create something new whilst the whole world tries to do so?

the amalgam of soundscaping elements with fieldrecordings and cinematic atmospheres, underlined with au courant electronic beat programming isn’t even close to be called a new thing, but as always, the difference lies in the details.

ruben koster and menno jager met me raabenstein via the net, just another very contemporary behaviour, and soon after decided to start a project together. files were sent, first scetches outlined but soon the need to work face to face appeared. meeting in berlin and producing tracks together changed the lagerfeltz idea completely, filling in the personal dialogue and the necessity sharing musical positions and differences.

the album ‘aar’ by lagerfeltz takes a commodius place between the grand masters of the genre, boards of canada and broadcast just to name a few. in their research to build their own melodic universe lagerfeltz comes to you with passion and sensitive imagination, charming you with most individual sonic trophies. in other words...

doubt the conventional wisdom unless you can verify it with reason and experiment...

'aar' is an amazing piece of music, as nonine recordings' always are. i'm surprised by every release, since nonine spans a broad range of musical genres, making different things but all of them relevant and adventurous. lagerfeltz hit the target ! it had already picked my attention with the track on the 'silent amps' compilation, but hearing the album in full-lenght is quite an uplifting experience, since it proposes a really new way of wrapping modern classical music with electronics.

wat? experimentele elektronische muziek waarin scherpe industriële geluiden afgewisseld worden met diepe beats en buitenaards klinkende samples. de muziek is instrumentaal en heeft iets mysterieus, bijna spookachtig, waardoor het goed te gebruiken is als film-, of achtergrondmuziek. de moeite waard? de keuze voor dit genre zal de jongens van lagerfeltz waarschijnlijk geen radiohit opleveren. het is ook niet echte luistermuziek. om de volledige ervaring te krijgen zou je de filmpjes moeten kijken die ze op internet hebben gezet. neem het eerste nummer van dit album 'aar#1'. dit nummer lijkt op de cd wat saai en eentonig, maar bij het zien van de clip op youtube is het een erg indrukwekkend geheel. - score: goed

lagerfeltz é mais um projecto do prolífico músico, dj, editor e produtor alemão me raabenstein, aqui acolitado pelos holandeses ruben koster e menno jager, com os quais trabalha à distância. «aar» é a edição que inaugura esta aventura sónica, um empreendimento que está de acordo com a única regra que conhecemos a raabenstein: a ausência de regra! sentindo-se completamente à vontade no domínio da tecnologia musical electrónica, a acção dos lagerfeltz parece criar novas formas a cada movimento, como se a música se construisse a si própria como processo de auto-sustentação. não porque nunca ninguém tenha experimentado intometer-se nestes terrenos em que a electrónica se estende placidamente pela linha do horizonte nocturno, fazendo cintilar pequenas luzes em silhuetas escuras, das quais se pressentem movimentos espaçados; aqui a novidade não será essa coordenada, mas sim um modo de operar que enfatiza o cuidado e a paixão que se observa nos pequenos detalhes de uma narrativa cinemática de adensado mistério.

um mistério que começa no título do disco, «aar», e que se espalha por todos os temas aqui presentes, em cujas designações sempre encontramo a designação «aar», funcionando como convite para a descoberta do fio que conduz toda a acção imaginária evocada por estes sons tão talentosamente conjugados e sequenciados e tão calhados para a banda sonora de uma história perdida na memória de cada ouvinte. uma edição que conhece apenas o formato digital e que não nega a sua condição de produto musical avançado, de uma imaginação que parece estar à frente da sua própria era.

in de zomer van 2008 leerden de twee heldernaren die schuil gaan achter rupert&mennert de in berlijn woonachtige me raabenstein kennen via internet. door hun gedeelde passie voor experimentele muziek besloot het trio kort daarop te gaan samenwerken onder de naam lagerfeltz. wat begon met uitwisselen van wat eerste schetsen via internet, resulteerde in een album met muziek die niet iedereen zal waarderen. toch is er reden genoeg om eens voorzichtig te proeven van de stukken die lagerfeltz met veel precisie heeft samengesteld.

eén woord om een gerecht van pasta, rode ui, olijven, sperziebonen en stukjes zalmfilet te omschrijven bestaat niet, maar aan de hand van de hoofdingrediënten kun je wel inschatten of het gerecht je lekker lijkt. dat geldt ook voor aar. menno jager (rupert) en ruben koster (mennert) lieten hun fantasie de vrije loop en maakten opnamen van bijvoorbeeld water, gootsteen, pannen en kinderspeelgoed en sneden dit als ervaren koks in kleine stukjes, bewerkten dit en leverden het resultaat door aan raabenstein. hij voegde ongestructureerde ritmes, melodie en extra sfeer toe. het nummer ateraar heeft zelfs een bijzonder helders tintje in de vorm van zangeres saskia oving. aan de buitenkant lijkt de muziek soms ijzig koud, maar wie de moeite neemt dit laagje weg te eten, treft een warm en romig geheel aan dat door veel mensen is omschreven als filmmuziek. twee nummers zijn dan ook inmiddels voorzien van beelden.

a trip outta reality that i've enjoyed listening to. congrats on another full lenght nonine album. It's very much like taking a trip into the nether worlds of the imagination, and yet it's someone else's imagination that's created the album, and very much up to the listener to interpret. the album has all of the elements that I find intriguing in a nonine album: the meeting between dense and atmospheric electronic and the most adventurous sides of classical music. it's been a pleasure listening to it, and it'll get my full support...
