slowcream is me raabenstein, a musician with a background in film and painting and also one of the men behind nonine recordings. as slowcream, raabenstein displays a certain affection for combining (the basic principles of) classical music with minimal electronica. something he already executed with great success on last years’ live long and prosper...
on wax on wool he continues his path to greater extend, while also giving specific attention to a bizarre, oddly amusing spoken word content. the musical patterns (be it classical in nature or of more popular descent) interweave almost organically with the delicately set electronic raster, thus creating dense and wildly entertaining compositions. the spoken word element is presented like a radio play: a male voice (dark in timbre) tells us of his tragic and somewhat distorted views on (and place in) the world.
i guess i’m short in words on this one, but maybe sometimes it isn’t necessary to waste too many lines. this album is excellent and to me an original and successful work on its own. it took me several listens to fully appreciate this album, but by offering me the possibility slowcream delivered a very fine job.

me raabenstein's neues album unter dem namen slowcream klingt wie ein traumartiger dunkler filmscore. er arbeitet mit gesampelten jazz- und orchestersounds, betont warmen instumentalklängen, filmdialogschnipseln, digitalen beats, konkreten klängen und rauschigen flächen. das alles kombiniert er mit dezenten 80er-jahre-synthezizer-sounds zu langsamen und minimal gehaltenen tracks. dazu erzählt eine männerstimme, die direkt aus einem alten gangsterfilm zu kommen scheint, lakonisch merkwürdige geschichten und verstärkt das david-lynch-gefühl des albums. eine sehr cineastische platte, die sicher am besten morgens um vier funktioniert.

in its bold integration of 20th -century classical, spoken word, and experimental electronic genres, wax on wool exemplifies a noticeable advance upon live long and prosper, me raabenstein's previous slowcream full-length. in the new, forty-seven-minute release, the berlin-based producer again seamlessly weaves past, present, and future into provocative set-pieces, with each one offering some distinctive change in style and mood from what comes before, and ultimately proving itself to be an exploration worth taking.
wax on wool's most ear-catching aspect is the presence of major major on numerous tracks; his slightly-filtered voice is rendered even more disturbing by the cryptic, even bizarre lyrics that raabenstein has him drawl. in the mutant, glitch-laden blues “into butter,” the words “last night my friend shaved my wife / he shaved her good with his knife / he turned around and said, “that's okay” / i paid him anyway” appear alongside a lurching, bottom-heavy pulse. “mild mountains” couples the woodsy pluck of an acoustic bass with major major's macabre lines “meg ryan called me last night / she said my voice was cute / she's in the mood for love” offset by swells of silken strings and the singing tone of a solo violin. while the lyrics in “punch indigo,” which presumably refer to the golem legend (“and you, poor creatures, who conjured you out of the clay?”), are more straightforward, raabenstein isn't above including tongue-in-cheek humour in the lyrics, as “they shaved my legs / they shaved my balls / i look like madonna / six feet tall” proves when it's heard against a lurching funk groove during “on carpets.”
the purely instrumental tracks are memorable too. “in the cave” presents a lulling dream-like electronic flow augmented by vaporous streams of strings, oboe, and harp, while the quietly uplifting “luck of the north” hews to a more conventional electronic line by layering restrained vibes and synth elements over a placid backing. “gwynplaine's hill” resembles the kind of narcoticized drift reminiscent of a ‘70s-era miles davis in-studio tape experiment during the time of his infatuation with stockhausen. raabenstein has a penchant for creating unusual juxtapositions, such as the bright ping of steel drums that's paired with strings, oboe, and electronic beats during “wanderlust.” by intertwining elements of romantic and serial classical music with electronics, wax on wool fuses the accessible and experimental into a challenging, sometimes disturbing, and yet still musical whole.

het is even goed opletten, want hapklaar is de muziek van slowcream niet. enig bandlid me raabenstein versopt het een ander in zijn musiek. 'wax on wool' is vaak flardmatig. raabenstein wordt in de markt gezet als nieuwe grootheid in het modern klassiek. hij is allesbehalve. af en toe waait er een stuk klassiek door de muziek, soms neigt het even naar twaalftoonsmusiek, maar nergens durft raabenstein een waarlijk gedurfde stap te nemen. nu moeten we hem niet veroordelen op de misplltste lofuitingen van anderen. hij levert namelijk een heel behoorlijk album af. zolang je het beschouwt als een soort minimale elektronica. de klanken heeft hij geregeld prachtig op orde. de spoken word is vermakelijk en over de gehele breedte is 'wax on wool' een prettig samengaan van verschillende soorten avontuurlijke muziek. dat het eindproduct vaak niet zo avontuurlijk is als de afzonderlijke delen is een teleurstelling. maar dat krijg je al snel wanneer er te hoge verwachtingen worden geschapen.

même s’il n’est guère au sommet de l’affiche, le nom de me raabenstein sonne désormais familièrement aux oreilles des fans d’electronica ambient, tendance jazz vs musique contemporaine. patron du label berlinois nonine, (co-)auteur de plusieurs sorties dont le très recommandable first raw de sqaramouche, il explore pour sa seconde production en tant que slowcream la musique du début du vingtième siècle (schulhoff, berg), qu’il confronte dans un osé mélange au spoken word revêche et lentissimo d’un fils vocal de william s. burroughs, le tout sur un fond dub ralenti et oppressant (into butter & mild mountains). d’autres instants atmosphériques fondent rapidement dans une ambient proche de ryan teague et de marsen jules, en moins bien jusqu’à l’entrée de la ligne mélodique, émouvante comme du giuseppe ielasi (in the cave). une curiosité, qu’on aime partager les jours de pluie.

no caso concreto dos slowcream, «wax on wool» representa um passo em frente no percurso iniciado com «live long and prosper», um disco que em 2008 traçava uma linha paralela entre a reequação clássica da composição e a tecnologia digital.
com este modo de operar, me raabenstein explora diversas possibilidades de juntar elementos tradicionais de articulação musical e suas estruturas anexas, com a facilidade aleatória de as subverter digitalmente, usando ritmos desestruturados com ambientes volúveis envoltos em nébulas cinza. as vozes, em registo discursivo que busca a fuga a qualquer familiaridade com o canto, surgem como uma espécie de relator social, com o fantasma de william burroughs a assombrar a tonalidade. ao mesmo tempo, esta música exala aconchego e estranheza, com contrastes acentuados entre texturas e melodias, elementos fugazes que acentuam a espontaneidade omnipresente, ruídos ambientais e pontos de fuga longínquos, com sons de vibrafone e contrabaixo a delinearem, aqui e ali, uma nova ordem, ou ainda, em diversos momentos, secções orquestrais a emprestarem uma envolvência épica que tornam «wax on wool» um disco refinado, ao qual apetece voltar constantemente.
com esta edição, slowcream sabe reafirmar-se como um projecto com ideias próprias e com vontade de criar uma música muito sua, que se mantém nas margens da experimentação, mas que adquire uma personalidade única e define um estilo à parte, simultaneamente bizarro e familiar, que aposta nos contrastes entre o acolhimento assombrado e o desconforto da tragédia, em sequências densas de entretenimento musical e estímulo racional.

predictably unpredictable, those eastern european electro-savantes have done it again with wax on wool. with an absolutely insane sense of musicality that pays scant regard to the cloying convention of tawdry ideals such as ‘structure’ and ‘cohesion’, slowcream craft a bizarrely brilliant brand of wanton experimentia that sounds like two adhd-riddled robots fucking on a distant planet in the year 4000. nothing is hurried: it’s all subtle tropes and quiet assurance, but persevere and you’ll discover a well-integrated fusion of classical and electronic samples.
most of the tracks come on as dissonant as the inside of a crash helmet seconds after a motorway pile-up but tracks like the staccato ‘into butter’ and fuzzily-distended ‘on carpets’ provide a neat counterpoint to more soothing segments like the wondrous ‘in the cave’, which comes together to form a smooth and sensual whole. all in all, wax on wool is off-kilter sashay through a fine batch of sporadically-inspired electronic minimalism. just make sure you get to it before the marketing men plunder and gut it to provide soundtracks for car ads.

with “wax on wool” slowcream aka me rabenstein and his label nonine step into another dimension of music. or rather out of the singular dimension they inhabited beforehand. no more of the one-dimensional beat cluttering and synth-layering of dark, post-urban electronic beats that swamp the internet like a virus. “wax on wool” is a collection of stark, edgy tracks that form soundscapes of sombre destruction and nightly devastation. the post-urban wasteland feeling remains the same, but there is more of modern composition in the music now than ever before. a vast step, actually, fascinatingly executed and growing with each listen.
i wonder where this kind of experimentalism comes from? usually, electronic beat producers aren’t very prone to experimentalism or progressiveness, even if they like to display the posture of innovation by sporting apple accesoires. with this album rabenstein moves far away from that. instead of taking the listener through a variety of more or less elegantly mixed and built tracks, he prefers to introduce a more complex and intricate structure to the whole album, where various parts refer to each other are spread over the whole record.
musically the most speaking features are real upright bass lines that invade the electronic clutters of sounds and sparks of noises to add a cool noir feeling to the already freezing music. as on the track “mild mountains”, which induces pictures of lost highways and cold havens right from the beginning. this track also features the second big change: a vocalist called major major speaking lyrics by rabenstein over the music. his tonality reminds me of the introductory speaker of godspeed! you black emperor’s epic debut, but what he offers is completely different. on this track he starts with “meg ryan called me last night, she said my voice is cute, i am in the mood for love”. what do you think of that, now, little prince? moreover, the intonation of major major makes even otherwisely daft lyrics like “i love to love you” sound tragic, dangerous and distorting.
during all of this rabenstein also seems to suit his fancy for weird instruments or at least soundbanks, introducing chimes and synths that sound as if they were taken straight from the soundtracks of mid-eighties action movies (“streets of thunder” type movies) and places them squarely on top of his tracks, where after some time they start to make sense. then there is a little sound in the back of “wanderlust” that reminds me of the meowing of a little cat being tortured. i hope it is something else. then there are deep bass lines and vocal samples from old movies and a load of other interesting things.
they main step of “wax on wool” (that means candles, right?) is the overal structure of the tracks the the whole album, its alignment with modern composition and dark soundscaping – which is something completely different to drone ambient or any kind of beat mixing for chill out clubs. this is more like soundtracks that need neither pictures nor narration to unfold their noir tales. “wax on wool” will be released end of february, but i couldn’t wait to write about it.

il poliedrico me raabenstein della berlinese nonine ritorna con uno dei suoi alter-ego artistici più intriganti, slowcream, moniker con il quale aveva giù entusiasmato la critica con l'ottimo liver long and prosper tramite il quale lo stimato produttore con un background nella pittura e nel cinema aveva cominciato a ramagliare un bizzaro incrocio fra musica classica, musica per film, elettronica glitch arditamente sperimentale e spoken word, intreccio che prosegue in questo lavoro con risultati spesso sorprendenti, unendo sovente scenari e liriche piuttosto provocatorie ad un wit creativo piuttosto rimarchevole e a citazioni considerevolmente edotte inserite in un contesto acusmatico che spesso affonda nell'humus mai arido in una forma piuttosto eccentrica di musica dodecafonica, mostrando una notevole attenzione per la costruzione di quasi-melodie ed intrecci armonici in un involucro di frequenze tagliate e rumori modulati e giungendo ad un'autentica definizione di estetica personale senza forzature di sorta. e' difficile definire tale estetica semplicemente con le note accezioni, essendo amalgamati numerosi elementi a tal punto che l'arte di assemblare suoni in maniera da risultare in potenti sinestesie di mr.raabenstein ha quasi più punti di tangenza con il mestiere di un visual artist che con quelli di un cesellatore sonoro. totalmente assenti qualsiasi forma di sclerotizzazione ritmica, in questo wax on wool viene invece riposta maggiore attenzione sul modo in cui incastonare i suoni e le spoken word recitate dalla voce tenebroso e leggermente filtrata di un certo major major in un flusso ininterrotto dal sospiro immaginifico, ma anche le tracce interamente strumentali conservano inalterati i dettami della predetta estetica, fungendo quasi da parti essenziali di una colonna sonora ed è curioso il modo persino le liriche spesso intinte in una sorta di ironia macabra e dal retrogusto noir sembrino incastonarsi nelle trame contorte e tutt'altro che convenzionali seguite dai suoni. splendido esemplare di quanto detto è l'oscura mild mountains, in cui il vocalist sembra quasi digrignare le corde vocali in un'espressione contrita e quasi maniacale citando meg ryan ("meg ryan called me last night / she said my voice was cute / she's in the mood for love"), su suoni clinici da film horror degli anni '70, toni metallici un rappresi, un basso sottotonale su cui si innestano violini che compaiono nella composizione come anemoni agonizzanti e sinistri rintocchi di orologi a pendolo che ricordano alcuni esprimenti dei laibach. straniante e opprimente spicca tra le tante tracce la geniale asymetric herding - il riferimento supponiamo sia alle teorie dell'herding, che cercano di spiegare facendo ricorso alle teorie comportamentale l'atteggiamento mentale di manager e investitori che spesso si accodano come nelle bestie al pascolo alle decisioni altrui sulla base di pochi segnali di facile reperibilità (e spesso fuorvianti...) -, in cui me sembra ritrarre un investitore rampantista, riuscendo quasi a dare una lezione sui semplicissimi meccanismi logici che sottendono normalmente l'attività di un trader senza scrupolp con un taglio dall'ironia amara con poche pennellate sonore: ancora le ruvide corde vocali propongono un'elencazione di titoli borsistici concludendo siffatte strofe con un eloquente "you gonna give 5000$ a week" e tanto per rendere l'idea della velocità dei mercati finanziari subito dopo quei cinquemila dollari diventano 5050$ (dollari cinquemilacinquanta in lettere...), andamento sottolineato dal ritmo che si fa sempre più pressante per poi infrangersi in una sorta di disturbo del pretestuoso soggetto narrante.
che in qualche misura me prenda il suo lavoro sul serio, quasi fosse un intermediario di trasmissioni trascendentali fra la vita e la morte, si appalesa dall'inizio - quando nella suggestiva punch indigo, collocata al vertice della tracklist, cita in maniera ardimentosa ma con una qualche ironia le parole finale del discorso di autopresentazione di zardoz, personaggio frutto della fantasia del regista john boorman che in un'interessante pellicola del 1974 interpretata da un giovanissimo sean connery atto a dipingere un futuro dalle tinte piuttosto fosche, qualificandosi "finto dio per occupazione e mago per inclinazione" per poi precisare in maniera consona alla prospettiva delle cosiddette "realtà multiple" della narrazione anche cinematografica che "oltre che manipolare i personaggi della storia " (come se fosse una divinità per l'appunto), rende consapevole i fruitori dell'opera di essere egli stesso frutto di un'invenzione, conclude con questa ossiancia domanda: "and you, poor creatures, who conjured you out of the clay? is god in show business too?" - alla fine - in cui invece colloca una traccia eloquente fin dal titolo, sacred knots -. il setting un po' incupito è così ben evocato fin dall'inizio e si inerpica in territori sonori ancor più rabbuiati con into butter, discreto esemplare di glitch-dub vischiosa su una scenografia decisamente noir resa con giochi di parole che insistono su un umorismo tra lo psicotico e il criminale: dall'iniziale verso “last night my friend saved my life” si passa ad una curiosa esplicazione nel verso successivo (“last night my friend shaved my wife”)...e se riuscite a ravvederci un certo umorismo, proseguite nell'ascolto per vedere come finisce la storia. la traccia strumentale senza alcun dubbio più affascinante ed immersiva del disco è "in the cave", che ci viene da interpretarla quasi come una citazione del mito della caverna di platone e ricollegarla dunque ad una sorta di affascinante introspezione fra i cristallini interstizi dell'anima...rimarrete abbacinati dalla bellezza di questa parentesi del disco così come di una grazia fragile sembrano impregnate tracce come l'algida delicatezza di luck of the north e la sequenza dei microsuoni di wanderlust, in cui mr.raabenstein vi infila miagolii, sviolinate, legnetti e inserti che evocano certa musica degli anni '20. il fatto che fra le grinze della lana su cui viene fatta colare cera bollente si malceli anche una qualche sferzante critica sociale, in maniera consona alla funzione "politico-sociale" dell'arte - le vecchie buone maniera... - meno votiva, è abbastanza evidente per esempio nel corroso groove quasi-funk di on carpets in cui l'ironia che essude da parole quali “they shaved my legs / they shaved my balls / i look like madonna / six feet tall” sembrano suonare come talvolta certo trasformismo si possa trasmutare facilmente in una sorta di mutilazione imposta. la magia in cui riesce raabenstein è di trasporre certo sarcasmo dialettico anche in traccia in cui le parole sono totalmente assenti, come in parte si poteva immaginare da quanto scritto fino ad ora: sic est in gwynplaine's hill, in cui riesce ad evocare soltanto coi suoni lo scenario lettario e l'intero mood che pervade nell'opera l'uomo che ride, considerato a torto uno dei romanzi più sferzanti di victor hugo, opera che viene ripresa dal titolo nella cui narrazione sembra celarsi la tragedia di gwynplaine, che pur soffrendo interiormente, è condannato dal destino (e da una paresi che ne trasfigura il volto disegnandone un sorriso finto...) conserva l'apparenza di una persona felice e gaia. ed è quasi incontrovertibile che la società odierna non soffra in parte della stessi paresi che colpiva quel personaggio letterario in forma ben più grave, essendo l'apparenza il fulcro di dinamiche sociali che spesso importano un vero e proprio ammutinamento dalla ragione...questi e altri spunti sono facilmente rinvenibili in wax on wool, disco che ci sentiamo di raccomandare anche per l'obiettivo pienamente centrato di rendere quasi accessibile un lavoro interamente sperimentale e denso di "disturbi", risultato che come molti immagineranno non è affatto semplice da ottenere. e bravo il signor raabenstein!

nonine is a world of avant-garde electronica and slow cream is their new offering. best listened to start to finish, switch off the lights and get lost in another world where squeaking hinges are looped, husky vocals meander, cosmic synths float slowly by, violin weaves in and out of hazy, stoned soundscapes, delicate melodies wrestle lovingly with stuttering beats and steel pan walks hand in hand with glitchy electronics.

me raabenstein, a.k.a. slowcream, es un artista electrónico-experimental que actualmente reside en berlín y que fusiona magistralmente samples de la clásica con elementos electrónicos. wax on wool, acaba de salir al mercado y supone el segundo trabajo de slowcream y sigue siendo igualmente original y diferente. su música incorpora material "ambient", recitados de voz y sonidos cercanos al post-industrial. y llegados a este tiempo de escucha de este tema me atrevo a decir que este wax on wool me recuerda a un joven alban berg iniciandose enlos principios de la música dodecafónica.

se siete in cerca di nuovi suoni dall'anima classica ma dal potenziale moderno, wax on wool, nuovo capitolo del berlinese me raabenstein alias slowcream, è quello che fa per voi. il manifesto si distingueva si distingueva già in live long and prosper (nonine 2008), tra laboriosa e imprevedibile tessitura sonora concessa ai connubi in frame d'elettronica in cui far convivere classica, ambient e soundtrack. slowcream ancòra il suono saturandone gli spazi interstiziali, abbattendo i confini di un genere ed evitando facili catalogazioni. di diverso, in wax on wool, (in uscita per i cataloghi della nonine recording), abbiamo inoltre la naturale progressione, le ritmiche semplici ma sospese tra basse frequenze e timbriche vocali, il tutto di una certa epica.da qui l’azzardo sul nuovo. i climi sono sempre pacati e mai sbilanciati. ossessivi nel dub glitch di into butter (venature blues), vaporosi nei melodici flussi ambient di in the cave o macabri per mild mountains (dilatate corde di basso).il repertorio predilige gli intorni più saturi e notturni, concedendosi comunque al convenzionale (luck of the north) o alle romantiche simbiosi tra moderno e classico (wanderlust) procedendo sempre controcorrente (gwynplaine's hill).
alla conosciuta dialettica del raabenstein aggiungiamo abilità composita. peculiarità che nelle mani di un buon artista diventano strumento per quello che è senza ombra di dubbio un interessante lascito. (6.8/10)

la nonine è stata una delle migliori sorprese dello scorso anno in ambito elettronico e per di più si tratta di un elettronica per nulla fredda, molto easy listening pur non tradendo la sua origine berlinese. questo disco degli slowcream non smentisce le ottime impressioni che avevo avuto dopo aver ascoltato il primo lavoro, slowcream come al solito vede coinvolto in prima persona me raabenstein che oltre ad aver licenziato i vari dischi sulla label berlinese ha in piedi collaborazioni in ambiti più o meno limitrofi con un numero imprecisato di altre persone. in questo wax on wool rabenstein ed il gruppuscolo di musicisti che gli ruota attorno si sono regalati un lavoro da top class “con bicchieri di cristallo” come diceva fresh prince (al secolo will smith). soft-tronica morbidissima, jazzeuse da colonna sonora per un road-movie notturno girato nella città del reichsstag e degli angeli di wenders. un disco prodotto in modo ineccepibile e che sembra addirittura semplice nella costruzione delle varie tracce... e sottolineo: sembra. le basse frequenze sono molto presenti ma ultradiscrete e sui tappeti che vanno a creare solitamente disegnano le melodie le voci di tastiere, pianoforti e synth, poi fiati, chitarra e qualche arrangiamento di archi, poi su tutto resta un parlato che finisce per essere molto efficace. più che altro la voce quando c’è è molto presente ma non si tratta di un cantato vero e proprio, in realtà si tratta di una voce profonda e cavernosa che ricorda quella di black sifichi già ospite con gli string of consciousness e in pianta stabile nei [1] kilo of black bondage uscito su wallace e che rimane uno dei dischi migliori mai editi dalla label di mirko spino. effetto maledettamente notturno e sorprendentemente rilassato, ancora di più che nel disco d’esordio, per il resto si tratta di ritmiche semplici e lasciate in sospensione, tappeti rossi e velluto anche nell’ambientazione sonora delle tracce, quindi morbidezza che attutisce tutto ovattandolo e che si sposerebbe perfettamente con luce soffusa e vestaglietta in raso (ah vecchi puttanieri!). a suo modo si tratta di un disco sexy, anche semplicemente per i testi ultraminimali e che vengono snocciolati in una perfetta ambientazione da black dahlia nel corso delle varie tracce.

'wax on wool' is BRILLIANT!!! apart from the fact that it's really
well crafted and the production is great, the vocal side of it adds
a real interesting and quirky touch. i like a lot! this stuff reminds me
of a meeting between autchre and arvo part.
